Uproar over halt to live coverage of Egypt's parliament

CAIRO – A decision by Egypt's new parliament to halt live coverage of its sessions has sparked criticism in the media and ridicule of the 596-seat chamber packed with supporters of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi.

The legislature — Egypt's first since 2012 — held its inaugural session on Sunday. The mostly procedural session turned into a raucous affair, complete with shouting matches, chaos and disputes over the constitution.

Egyptian daily Youm 7 ran with a headline on Wednesday, saying: "The parliament of chaos and confusion."

A hurried vote by a show of hands on Monday night ended the live coverage. Speaker Ali Abdel-AL said it was necessary to speed up the review of decrees issued by el-Sissi and his predecessor, interim President Adly Mansour.
