Swedish police say that a fire in a central Stockholm apartment building has left one person dead and several others injured.

Police spokesman Albin Naverberg said that more than 30 people were evacuated from the four-story apartment building and nine were hospitalized.

Naverberg said authorities were alerted to the blaze shortly after 10 a.m. (0900 GMT) Sunday. He said the fire was under control, but firefighters were expected to remain in the building for several hours to extinguish possible pockets of flames.

Witnesses told the TT news agency that they saw several people being rescued from balconies because of smoke in the stairwell of the apartment building.

The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known.
