Spain, Portugal brace for stormy weather, heavy rains, strong winds moving inland from south

Spain and Portugal are bracing for heavy rainfall and strong winds that are forecast to lash offshore islands and southern coastal regions before moving inland.

Spain's meteorological agency issued a warning that substantial rains and strong gusts of wind would affect "most of the Peninsula, Balearic and Canary Islands" until Nov. 3. Portugal's civil protection agency said Sunday that "people and vehicles should avoid flooded areas" near southwestern Faro.

The regional government of the Canary Islands off the northwest coast of Africa said Tenerife had been buffeted by stormy weather and that it was maintaining its emergency services on alert to deal with the aftermath, with intense precipitation predicted.

Spain's agency forecast "very heavy" rainfall in Andalusia and Valencia, while strong winds were expected in the Balearic island of Ibiza.
