PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – An off-duty Haitian police officer has been killed by gunmen who ambushed him after he got a loan from a bank in the country's capital.
Haitian National Police spokesman Gary Desrosiers identifies the slain officer as Wilber Etienne. He's the third officer to be fatally shot in recent days.
Etienne was shot multiple times Wednesday when two men on a motorbike cornered him on a road in the Port-au-Prince neighborhood of Delmas 24. The off-duty officer was also traveling on a motorbike.
The slaying comes a month after two officers were shot to death in the Cite Soleil shantytown. Those officers were on a motorcycle exchanging gunfire with gang members when they crashed on a pitted street. Police say the gunmen ran to the accident scene and killed the officers.
