A meeting between the German and Israeli leaders that was scheduled for Thursday has been canceled because of the security situation in Israel.

The regular meeting between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was set to take place in Berlin. Netanyahu already had scrapped plans to arrive in Germany on Wednesday.

German government spokesman Georg Streiter said Wednesday that the Israeli government called off the meeting, which would also have involved several ministers from both sides. He said the German government "regrets this cancellation and hopes that these consultations can be held at a later date."

The Israeli Embassy said Netanyahu had asked to postpone the talks because of the tense security situation.
