Palestinian medical officials say a Palestinian youth was killed as clashes continue with Israeli soldiers in the West Bank, spreading fears of a further escalation in the violence.

A doctor at the territory's Tulkarem hospital says the 18-year-old was killed early on Monday. Israel's military said hundreds of Palestinians threw firebombs, rolled burning tires and threw rocks at soldiers who eventually opened fire.

The Red Crescent says 456 Palestinians were hurt in two days of clashes.

On Saturday, a Palestinian stabbed two Israeli men to death and wounded a woman and her toddler in a brutal knife attack in Jerusalem's old city, close to a holy site that has been the focus of recent tensions.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas phoned U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to brief him on the unrest.
