BUCHAREST, Romania – The trial has started at Romania's high court for the country's prime minister, who has been indicted on corruption charges, including tax evasion and money-laundering.
The High Court for Cassation and Justice opened the case by discussing the legality of the indictment Monday. Prime Minister Victor Ponta is not required to attend the session.
Ponta, who turned 43 on Sunday, is the first sitting prime minister to be indicted and have his assets seized. He denies wrongdoing and has refused to resign.
The leader of the ruling Social Democratic Party, Liviu Dragnea, said Monday the party supports Ponta, prime minister since May 2012. It will meet later to discuss the developments.
The opposition Liberal Party is expected to file a motion of no-confidence against Ponta's government later Monday.
