JOHANNESBURG – Protesting students have halted classes at two South African universities.
According to South Africa's national broadcaster, students protested at the entrance of the Vaal University of Technology in the central Gauteng province. They refused to attend lectures until the university improved campus security after two students were raped and killed in recent weeks.
Student Services Director, Segopane Seroka said Tuesday the university plans to increase security and also disclosed that a third student was raped in January.
In the coastal city of Durban, protests turned violent at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, as students burned cars and buildings on Sunday evening, continuing into Monday.
According to a Durban newspaper, students are unhappy with changes to the financial aid scheme.
The university released a statement saying classes were suspended for two days.
