Pope Francis has slipped out of the Vatican for a personal errand: New lenses for his glasses.

Francis made a visit Thursday evening to an eyeglass store on the swank Via del Babuino, where he was seen trying on the glasses.

Shop owner Alessandro Spiezia told The Associated Press he put new lenses in the pope's existing frames.

Witness Daniel Soehe, a German visiting Rome with his father, said a bodyguard accompanied Francis and there were some policemen in civilian uniform but it was a relatively low-key affair.

When Francis isn't using his glasses, he keeps them tucked into his pants pocket, unlike Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI who always handed his eyeglasses off to an aide when he didn't need them.
