Poland's new President Andrzej Duda is attending a ceremony of the change of commander of the upgraded NATO corps in the northeast of the country.

As president, Duda is chief commander of Poland's armed forces. His presence at the ceremony at the Multinational Corps Northeast was his first meeting with the NATO formation based in Szczecin since he took office last week.

Polish, German and Danish officers serve in the corps that is being upgraded to a high readiness force to meet new security challenges in a region feeling threatened by a resurgent Russia. It is to command the so-called spearhead force.

In the ceremony Thursday, German Lt. Gen. Manfred Hofmann was taking command of the corps from Poland's Lt. Gen. Boguslaw Samol for a three-year term.
