Beijing police say a man slashed a woman to death and injured her French companion in one of the busiest commercial districts in broad daylight.

The attack Thursday occurred right outside a Uniqlo store in the vibrant Sanlitun shopping area also known for its many bars. The neighborhood is popular with foreigners and young people.

Police detained the suspect but offered no motive, and the online statement identified him only as a 25-year-old whose family name is Gao.

Police say both victims were rushed to a hospital, where the woman died.
