PESHAWAR, Pakistan – Pakistani police say a military helicopter has crashed in a mountainous region in northwest Pakistan, killing at least eight people on board.
Police official Fida Khan says the helicopter was on the way to the northern town of Gilgit when it went down Thursday near the district of Mansehra in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
He says it's unclear what caused the crash and that an investigation is underway.
However, a senior army officer says the helicopter was carrying medical supplies and that it was going to Gilgit from Rawalpindi, a garrison city near the capital, Islamabad. The officer had no other details.
The army official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to reporters.
