SYDNEY – An Australian nurse who says he was forced by the Islamic State movement to work as a medic in Syria is to appear in a Sydney court on terrorism-related charges.
Australian Federal Police said in a statement on Saturday that Adam Brookman was arrested on arrival at Sydney International Airport on Friday night.
The 39-year-old will appear in the Parramatta Local Court on Saturday where counterterrorism officials will seek his extradition to Victoria state.
Police did not detail his charges.
Brookman surrendered to officials in Turkey on Tuesday.
Brookman told Fairfax Media in May that he went to Syria last year to do humanitarian work. Brookman says he was forced to join Islamic State militants after being injured in an airstrike and taken to a hospital controlled by the group.
