The United Nations Security Council has agreed to impose sanctions on six generals from South Sudan for fueling the ongoing conflict there.

The conflict has forced more than two million people to flee their homes, killed thousands and created a humanitarian emergency.

U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power said the council's decision Wednesday demonstrates that those who commit atrocities and undermine peace will "face consequences."

South Sudan has seen fighting between supporters of President Salva Kiir and former vice president Riek Machar since December 2014.

The council imposed sanctions on three generals from Kiir's government and on three rebel commanders.
