Macedonia's main opposition leader has called for a caretaker government to lead the country until early elections next year, following an agreement to hold a ballot to resolve one of the country's worst political crises since its independence in 1991.
Social-Democrat head Zoran Zaev said Monday he would not accept a new vote organized by Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski's conservative-led government.
Zaev and Gruevski agreed last week in European Union-mediated talks to hold a new election before May 1, 2016, to resolve a crisis stemming from a massive wiretap scandal. The details are to be hammered out in Brussels in another round of talks on June 10.
Zaev also accused Gruevski of illegally wire-tapping at least 10 non-government organizations who have been critical of his government. Gruevski denies the charge.
