Guatemala's interior minister is stepping down amid a growing political crisis and calls for President Otto Perez Molina and officials close to him to resign.
Mauricio Lopez Bonilla is a former army lieutenant coronel who has been head of the Interior Ministry since the current government began in 2012. He was Perez Molina's campaign chief and is a top official in the ruling Patriotic Party.
Presidential spokesman Jorge Ortega said Lopez Bonilla was resigning Thursday.
Prosecutors have not linked Lopez Bonilla to a recent customs corruption scandal that led to the resignation of Perez Molina's vice president, whose private secretary was alleged to be the scheme's ringleader.
