A family member of prominent Malawian journalist Raphael Tenthani has confirmed that he was killed in a car accident.

Kizito Tenthani said on Sunday that his brother was killed in a car accident at around 9 p.m. on Saturday evening. Tenthani's two sons who were in the car with him, along with the driver and another passenger survived with minor injuries.

Tenthani, 43, was best known for his weekly column "Muckraking on Sunday" in the Malawian press and was a contributor for The Associated Press and the BBC. He was also known as a press freedom activist.

According to an AP newsletter, Tenthani was the recipient of a United Nations Media Award in 2010 for his contribution to an AP series on the Millennium Development Goals.
