A Venezuelan police officer who killed a 14-year-old boy during an anti-government protest in February has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

The public prosecutor's office announced Friday that 23-year-old officer Javier Mora had admitted to responsibility in the death of Kluiverth Roa.

Roa died after being shot in the head by a plastic bullet amid an anti-government protest in San Cristobal, a city in the restive western part of Venezuela.

His death sparked national outrage and ignited calls to repeal a law that authorized the deadly use of force against protesters. Government officials condemned the killing, but defended the law, which remains in effect.
