Australia's political opposition has accused the government of failing to fully respect the country's rejection of the death penalty in its latest directive to federal police on how they should cooperate with police forces in other nations, including Indonesia.
Many in Australia have been angered by Indonesia's execution this week of eight drug traffickers, including two Australians.
Australian police have been sharply criticized for having tipped off their Indonesian counterparts in 2005 about the smuggling plot organized by the two men.
The opposition Labor Party accused the government on Thursday of failing to steadfastly oppose the death penalty in the police directive.
Government ministers responded by angrily reiterating their opposition to the penalty and accusing Labor of seeking political advantage from the executions.
