A resident and an official said that gunmen killed at least three people in an attack on a village in Mali's north.

A resident of Goundam, 100 kilometers (62 miles) west of Timbuktu, said the attackers shot and killed the head of the national guard, his deputy and a third person.

A Mali government official confirmed the attack and said the third person killed was a girl. He said he did not know what group was responsible for the attack.

The resident spoke on condition of anonymity because of fears of reprisal attacks, and the official because he was not permitted to speak to the press.

Officials fear this renewed violence could upset a peace accord meant to be signed on May 15.
