The U.N. peacekeeping mission in Mali says its forces have come under attack near the northern city of Timbuktu.

The U.N. mission said Tuesday that some of its vehicles came under fire early in the morning.

The violence comes just a day after clashes erupted in the town of Menaka.

While no one was hurt in the attack Tuesday, the escalation is worrying as it is likely to further undermine Mali's peace process.

A peace deal is set to be signed between the Malian government and various armed groups next month.

The U.N. said the fresh violence had been carried out by elements of the CMA, a coalition of separatist Tuareg groups active in the area.
