The police officer leading of a team of experts working to identify people killed when Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was brought down in Ukraine has criticized an anthropologist for showing images of victims at a lecture for medical students.
Arie de Bruijn says in a statement Thursday that Prof. George Maat, part of the identification team, made comments to students that were "speculative, untrue and partly outside his area of expertise." De Bruijn called Maat's comments "extremely serious" and apologized if they had offended relatives of the dead.
Maat said in a statement he regretted it if his comments had upset next of kin.
Forensic experts are still working to identify remains of the 298 people killed when flight MH17 was brought down last July. Only two victims remain unaccounted-for.
