Authorities in Honduras say prominent father-son lawyers who had held a variety of political positions have been killed in the city of San Pedro Sula.

Chief prosecutor Rene Diaz said Friday a special unit would investigate the killings of 70 year-old Jose Eduardo Gauggel and his son, 48-year-old Jose Eduardo Gauggel Medina.

At least four unidentified gunmen attacked the pair at their home Thursday. Diaz says evidence indicates they had just withdrawn money to pay their employees so robbery could have been the motive.

The elder Gauggel was former president of the Nicaragua-based Central American Court of Justice and had been a justice on Honduras' supreme court. He had been a member of the Central American Parliament since 2014.

The younger Gauggel was a lawmaker for the opposition Liberal Party.
