Officers shot and killed a man Thursday after three people were stabbed outside a church in the Downtown Eastside neighborhood, investigators said.

Police received a call at about 5 p.m. about a man stabbing people and arrived to find the suspect wielding a knife outside the church. A police statement said officers tried to arrest the suspect without success and fired multiple rounds from a bean bag shotgun in an attempt to control him.

The man, who police would not identify, was shot and killed when he "turned his attention to a woman who was standing nearby and he began to stab her," the statement said.

The woman was hospitalized in critical condition and two men who were attacked were treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.
