A well-known mountaineer from India has been found dead in the Andes.

Malli Mastan Babu had been missing since March 23 in the mountains on the border between Chile and Argentina.

The 40-year-old's death was confirmed by an official at India's embassy in Santiago over the weekend. It was first announced on a Facebook page created to provide information about rescue efforts.

The mountaineer had achieved the feat of climbing the highest peaks on each of the seven continents. He began the ascent of Cerro Tres Cruces in Chile's Atacama region on March 22, and he was expected to return the next day.

Rescue teams in Chile and Argentina had been searching for the mountaineer since then.
