A senior military official in Burkina Faso says a Romanian security officer has been kidnapped from a mining site in the north of the country.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media, said Saturday that the Romanian was kidnapped by five assailants who attacked his convoy during a patrol. He said the Romanian also has French citizenship.

The incident took place near the manganese mine run by Pan African Minerals in the town of Tambao, located in the northeast corner of Burkina Faso near the borders with Mali and Niger.

The official said it was unclear where the assailants came from.

Northern Mali, that borders northeast Burkina Faso, fell to separatist rebels and then al-Qaida-linked Islamic extremists in 2012.
