More than 280 passengers and crew are facing a possible third night on board a ferry that ran aground just outside port on the small Aegean island of Kassos, because bad weather hampered the arrival of a tug boat.

The coast guard said the Vintsenzos Kornaros, its 227 passengers and 55 crew were not in any danger.

A tug boat that left the Cycladic island of Mykonos Thursday managed to cover less than half the distance before it was forced to take shelter from high winds and rough seas in the Aegean island of Astypalaia. The coast guard said Friday the tug was waiting for a break in the weather to continue its journey.

The ship ran aground just outside Kassos port late Wednesday night.
