A Turkish government official says to eliminate a root cause of Islamic extremism, European countries must give their Muslim residents greater opportunities and more reasons for hope.

Volkan Bozkir, Turkey's minister for European affairs, said Saturday that many Muslims living in Europe "now feel they are the other."

Bozkir called that the leading reason for Islamic radicalization and terrorism. He said European leaders should take action so their Muslim populations will stop feeling they are "outside the circle."

The Turkish official spoke at a panel discussion in Brussels sponsored by the German Marshall Fund on what should be done to counter the wave of Islamic extremism and terrorism affecting European nations and other countries.
