Ivory Coast's former first lady is appealing her conviction and a 20-year sentence for her role in the West African country's post-election violence.

More than 3,000 people were killed after former President Laurent Gbagbo refused to accept his defeat in 2010 elections to Alassane Ouattara, who is now president.

The former president awaits trial at the International Criminal Court in The Hague for crimes allegedly committed as he clung to power.

But Ivory Coast refused to surrender his wife to the court. Instead, she was tried in an Ivorian court for undermining state security. She had pleaded not guilty.

Lawyer Rodrigue Dadje said Monday that the defense team is appealing last week's verdict and sentence.

The prosecution is also appealing the sentence, noting that it only asked for 10 years.
