Ireland's ambassador to Romania has been hospitalized in the capital, Bucharest, after he fell and hit his head.

A doctor at the Floreasca Emergency Hospital confirmed Tuesday that Gerard Corr was hospitalized in intensive care.

Manuela Guran, a doctor in the intensive therapy section of the hospital said she could not provide further details on Corr's condition because the embassy had requested patient confidentiality.

Mediafax news agency reported Corr fell Monday lunchtime after leaving a restaurant and was transported by ambulance to the nearby hospital.

The embassy is closed until next week and could not be reached for comment. Corr has been Ireland's ambassador to Romania and Moldova since 2013.
