Brazil's federal police say they have arrested former Italian militant Cesare Battisti on a judge's order.

Thursday's arrest of Battisti comes despite his being granted asylum in 2010 by former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and having the Supreme Court approve that asylum in 2013.

Earlier this month judge Adverci Rates Mendes de Abreu ruled in favor of prosecutors' requests that Battisti's asylum be voided because he had been convicted in Italian for four murders. The prosecutors argue that goes against a Brazilian law banning giving residency status to anyone convicted of a felony abroad.

Battisti's lawyer Igor Sant'Anna Tamasauskas did not return calls seeking comment, but has said he will appeal the most recent ruling.
