Former Ivory Coast 1st lady gets 20 years' jail for post-election violence, thousands killed

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast – An Ivory Coast court has sentenced former first lady Simone Gbagbo to 20 years in prison for her part in post-election violence that killed more than 3,000 people four years ago.

Her lawyer called it a "purely political decision."

Former President Laurent Gbagbo awaits trial for war crimes at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Ivory Coast refused that court's request to surrender his wife for trial thehre.

Simone Gbagbo, 65, was sentenced early Tuesday after hours of deliberation. She was found guilty of undermining state security.

More than 3,000 people were killed after Gbagbo refused to accept his defeat in 2010 elections. The Gbagbos were arrested in 2011 after French troops and U.N. peacekeepers stormed a bunker where the couple had been holed up in Abidjan, the capital.
