The European Union has extended for a year an asset freeze on former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and others in his administration linked to the misuse of state funds.

The EU said in a statement Thursday that its measures target "persons subject to initial investigations on the embezzlement of Ukrainian state funds."

Yanukovych fled to Russia in February 2014 after protests in which more than 100 people died.

The full list of people targeted will be published in the EU's official journal on Friday. It currently contains 18 people, including Ukraine's former interior, justice, health and education ministers, plus the former prosecutor general and head of security.

The freeze will be extended by one year for 14 officials, and three months for the others.
