Afghan officials and police say a suicide bomber driving a car packed with explosives has targeted a vehicle of the Turkish embassy in the Afghan capital during the morning rush hour.

Deputy Interior Minister Mohammad Ayub Salangi says a Turkish embassy vehicle was damaged and casualties were expected.

"The target was a Turkish embassy vehicle, one person is wounded and the driver possibly killed," he told media.

The Turkish and Iranian embassies are adjacent in the center of Kabul. The blast took place outside the gate of Iran's mission.

Associated Press television footage showed two black armored vehicles bearing Turkish diplomatic plates.

It is the first known attack on a Turkish target in the Afghan capital.

The last similar attack in Kabul took place near the airport in January.
