Al-Jazeera English journalist Mohamed Fahmy, who is awaiting retrial in Egypt, says his Qatar-funded employer is partially to blame for his ordeal.
Fahmy said Thursday that while the trial of him and two other colleagues on terrorism-related charges is an infringement on freedom of expression, the case was complicated by Al-Jazeera's "negligence" and Qatar's use of the broadcaster to "wage a media war" against Cairo.
Egypt and Qatar are locked in a dispute over Doha's support for Egypt's ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
Fahmy was released on bail Feb. 12 following more than a year in prison. He is lobbying to be deported to Canada, where he has citizenship. But unlike his Australian colleague Peter Greste, Fahmy was not deported even after surrendering his Egyptian nationality.
