Envoys from the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia are pressing for a resumption of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians "as soon as possible."

The so-called Quartet of Middle East mediators met Sunday on the sidelines of an international security conference in Germany. The group was long sidelined in peacemaking efforts, but U.S.-mediated peace talks aimed at a two-state solution collapsed last year.

A statement from the group called on both sides "to refrain from actions that undermine trust or prejudge final status issues." It said it's important to address the "acute fiscal challenges" faced by the Palestinians and that the pace of reconstruction in Gaza needs to be stepped up.
