A Roman Catholic website says a bishop detained in China for the past 14 years due to the country's feud with the Vatican has died at age 94.
The Vatican-linked ucanews.com said Chinese officials informed the family on Jan. 30 that Bishop Cosmas Shi Enxiang had died. The family wasn't told of the cause.
Shi was ordained in 1947, two years before officially atheistic China was founded. Like scores of priests, Shi suffered long terms of imprisonment and hard labor between 1957 and 1980. He was taken away again in 2001.
Beijing now allows Christians to worship openly, but it disagrees with the Vatican over the authority to appoint bishops. The Vatican secretly appointed Shi as bishop of the northern city of Yixian in 1982.
