Swiss police say an American skier has been rescued after getting stuck in snow for more than 48 hours when he went off-piste.

Vaud canton (state) police said Wednesday that the 19-year-old student, whose name wasn't given, was suffering from hypothermia when rescuers found him Tuesday and taken to a hospital in Zweisimmen. His life isn't in danger.

Police say they were alerted Tuesday that the man, who had headed off to ski at the resort of Les Diablerets on Sunday, was missing. He was found about 100 meters (yards) above a road, exhausted but conscious.

The skier told police he got lost after going off-piste, broke a binding and continued on one ski before falling into a stream and getting stuck in the snow.
