BANGUI, Central African Republic – The International Criminal Court says that a Ugandan rebel leader turned over to authorities in a remote jungle in Africa is now headed to The Hague.
In a statement released late Tuesday, ICC authorities said Dominic Ongwen would be held in a detention center in the Netherlands until his trial on war crimes charges.
The ICC said that Ongwen would undergo a medical visit upon arrival and a date would soon be set for his first court appearance.
Ongwen was one of the leaders of the rebel group Lord's Resistance Army who have been accused of terrorizing civilians not only in Uganda but also in Central African Republic.
In his first comments since being handed over, Ongwen said he did not want to "die in the bush."
