Macedonian media say a journalist recently jailed after an appeals court upheld his conviction for revealing the identity of a protected witness has been granted temporary release because of health problems.

Tomislav Kezarovski left jail Tuesday and joined about 2,000 people demonstrating outside the appeals court in his support and demanding more press freedom.

Kezarovski was initially sentenced in October 2013 to 4½ years for revealing in a 2008 magazine article the identity of a protected witness in a murder case. The appeals court upheld his conviction but cut his sentence to two years. Kezarovski had been under house arrest but was ordered to serve the remaining time in jail.

Local media said Kezarovski would have to return to jail on Feb. 18.
