An Iraqi military spokesman says 30 members of the Kurdish peshmerga have been killed during a battle with Islamic State group militants in the country's north.
The spokesman for the Iraqi Kurdish force in Irbil, Halgurd Hekmat, told The Associated Press on Sunday that the clashes erupted Saturday when the extremists approached the town of Gwer outside the northern city of Mosul, held by the Islamic State group.
Hekmat had information about casualties suffered by the Islamic State group.
The Islamic State group captured Gwer as part of its blitz across northern and western Iraq this past summer, but it was taken by the peshmerga in August.
