Japan's leader says he will express remorse on the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II in August.
Speaking at a news conference Monday, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sought to reassure the world that he wouldn't veer from past official statements on Japan's wartime responsibility.
He said his Cabinet would uphold the general stance on history of previous prime ministers, including a 1995 apology on the 50th anniversary of the war's end.
Abe is known for his nationalist views, and many analysts have speculated that he may seek to downplay Japan's responsibility for the war. Any such move would anger neighbors China and South Korea, and U.S. policymakers worry that it would add to tensions in the region.
