Leader, members of Mexican self-defense group turn themselves in following shootout

MORELIA, Mexico – Two leaders and nearly three dozen members of rural self-defense forces in the western state of Michoacan who were involved in a clash that left 11 dead have turned themselves in to authorities.

Luis Antonio Torres, a leader better known as "Simon el Americano," turned himself in along with nine of his followers on Tuesday. His rival, Hipolito Mora, a founder of a self-defense group later integrated into rural police, had given himself up Saturday, days after the shootout in which his son was killed.

Federal security commissioner in Michoacan, Alfredo Castillo, said in a news conference Tuesday that 37 people were in custody and another 19 had been identified who authorities hope will also turn themselves in.

The two groups shot it out on Dec. 16 near La Ruana.
