An official says rescuers have recovered 12 workers who were trapped for more than three days in a collapsed tunnel at a hydropower plant under construction in central Vietnam.

Local government official Pham Trieu in Lam Dong province said the 11 men and one woman needed medical attention but are in stable condition.

The workers were trapped Tuesday morning when a section of the tunnel collapsed as they were placing concrete on its ceiling.

Rescuers drilled a hole to deliver air and food to the workers while engineering troops and miners dug a tunnel to reach them.

A private company started construction of the 23-megawatt hydropower plant in 2003, but it has faced repeated delays.
