UNITED NATIONS – North Korea is asking the United Nations Security Council to put the CIA's harsh treatment of terror suspects on its agenda for debate.
North Korea's U.N. Ambassador Ja Song Nam made the request in a letter to Chad's U.N. ambassador, the current council president.
The letter released Monday objected to the Security Council's decision to include North Korea's human rights record on its agenda — the first step toward a possible referral to the International Criminal Court.
Instead, Ja said the council should take up "the recently revealed CIA torture crimes." The ambassador called the torture "the gravest human rights violation in the world."
North Korea's human rights situation was placed on the council agenda after two-thirds of its members requested it. A spokesman for Chad's U.N. Mission said the debate would occur on Dec. 22 or 23.
