Pakistani intelligence officials say a suspected U.S. drone strike has killed four alleged militants in the country's tribal region along the Afghan border.

They say the missiles struck a compound Wednesday in the town of Dattakhel in North Waziristan, a lawless tribal area used as a safe haven by a mix of local and al-Qaida linked foreign militants.

The Pakistani army launched a major campaign to clear the area of militants in mid-June; so far it claims to have killed over 1,200 militants. But resistance continues, and a militant raid on Nov. 16 killed a Pakistani army officer and two soldiers

The three Pakistani officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.
