UNITED NATIONS – The top U.N. envoy in Iraq is telling the U.N. Security Council the country is looking to the international community to remove the "life-threatening danger" to its security posed by the Islamic State terrorist group.
Nickolay Mladenov spoke Friday at the start of a ministerial meeting on Iraq called by the United States, the current council president, and chaired by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.
Kerry convened the council to show support for the new Iraqi government and encourage it to be inclusive while supporting its efforts to combat the Islamic State group.
The meeting came a few hours after French fighter jets struck militant Islamic State group targets in Iraq, becoming the first country to publicly add military muscle to United States airstrikes against the group.
