Pioneering Egyptian civil rights lawyer and activist, father of imprisoned blogger, dies at 63

CAIRO – One of Egypt's most prominent civil rights lawyer and campaigner Ahmed Seif has died from complications of heart surgery. He was 63.

Seif died Wednesday in a Cairo hospital after spending nearly two weeks in an intensive care unit. He was one of Egypt's leading rights campaigners, imprisoned in the 1970s and 1980s and spent at least five years in prison.

Seif was tortured in detention, and campaigned against it and other rights abuses since. Seif also took up hundreds of court cases of activists and Islamists.

Among his last clients were his son, prominent blogger Alaa Abdel-Fattah, who was sentenced to 15 years for violating a controversial protest law. Abdel-Fattah was granted a retrial but remains in detention. Seif's younger daughter is also detained and on trial for protesting.
