Military officials say suspected al-Qaida-planted car bomb kills 2 troops in southern Yemen

Military officials in Yemen say a car bomb targeting army posts has killed two soldiers in the country's south.

The officials said forces foiled two other attacks by suspected al-Qaida militants Sunday, killing at least three of the assailants in the southern province of Abyan.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters.

Yemen's state news agency reported that army forces damaged two other bomb-laden cars and killed those inside before they reached the targeted military camps.

The U.S. considers Yemen's local branch of al-Qaida to be the world's most dangerous. It has launched drone strikes there as the Yemeni government has waged repeated offensives to drive out the militants from the south, most recently this spring.
