Two U.S. F16 fighter jets escorted a plane bound for Panama City back to Toronto's Pearson Airport about 45 minutes after departure after a passenger threatened the aircraft.

Sunwing Airlines spokeswoman Janine Chapman said Friday that Flight 772 departed at 7 a.m. (1100 GMT) and turned around over West Virginia when an "agitated passenger directly threatened the aircraft." Chapman did not elaborate on the threat.

NORAD Captain Jennifer Stadnyk says the two fighter jets from Ohio flew with plane out of U.S. airspace to Toronto as a "precaution."

Toronto Police Const. Lilly Fitzpatrick said a 25-year-old Canadian man has been arrested.

Chapman says the flight, carrying 183 passengers and six crew, landed safely and no one was injured.

Chapman says the flight will depart again for Panama this afternoon.
